The Graduate Certificate in Debate Pedagogy is intended for debate coaches who want to enhance their programs by improving their own pedagogical skills. Depending on local requirements, the program may qualify graduates for college-level teaching.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must:

1. Meet all general requirements for admission to UAM as a graduate student.
2. Hold a bachelor’s or graduate degree in Communication or a closely related field;
3. Submit a personal essay addressing their experience coaching debate or reasons for wanting to coach debate.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Debate Pedagogy program will demonstrate:

1. Knowledge and understanding of argumentation theory and pedagogy;
2. Knowledge and understanding of successful coaching and administrative strategies for creating and developing competitive debate teams;
3. Ability to interpret, evaluate, and critique research related to debate and forensics.
